Withdraw from the Match

The 2019 APPIC Match

Things to Know

If you decide not to submit a Rank Order List for any reason, you must withdraw from the Match using the NMS Match System by the Rank Order List deadline.

Applicants who withdraw will not be included in the matching process. However, withdrawn applicants are permitted to seek positions after each Phase of the Match as described below.

  • Applicants who withdraw from Phase I of the Match will be permitted to participate in Phase II. They will be able to access information on programs with positions available in Phase II, apply to those programs, and submit a Rank Order List for Phase II of the Match.
  • Applicants who withdraw from Phase II of the Match will be permitted to participate in the Post-Match Vacancy Service operated by APPIC after the results of Phase II of the Match are released.

No withdrawals or reinstates for Phase II of the Match can be submitted through the NMS Match System until the system opens for Phase II. If you withdrew from both Phase I and Phase II of the Match prior to the Phase I Rank Order List deadline your withdrawal is carried over automatically to Phase II.

If you have withdrawn from Phase II, but subsequently decide that you want to submit a Rank Order List for that Phase of the Match, you can Reinstate yourself in the Match using the NMS Match System prior to the Rank Order List deadline for that Phase of the Match.

Implications of Withdrawing

If you withdraw from the Match in Phase II, you will not be matched to a position. Any rankings of programs you may have submitted for Phase II will not be used in the Match.

While you are withdrawn, your withdrawn status will be visible to programs.

Withdrawing from the Match does not affect your eligibility to participate in the Match in future years.

If you enter and certify a Rank Order List and do not withdraw by the Rank Order List deadline, your rankings will be included in the Match. If you are matched with a program, you must accept the position with which you are matched as described in the Applicant Agreement and the APPIC Match Policies. Violations of the policies of the Match will be reported to the APPIC Standards and Review Committee. The APPIC Board may decide to impose penalties on those who violate the policies.
