Things to Know
- Registering for the Match does not constitute an application to any program.
- Applications to all programs that participate in the Match must be sent using AAPI, APPIC's application service for psychology internships.
- You should check with each program directly about its application requirements and deadline dates.
- You should enter your 5-digit Match Code Number into AAPI in order to provide your Match Code Number to the programs where you apply.
Sending Applications Using AAPI
All programs that participate in the Match use AAPI, and you must send applications to programs using this service.
AAPI is a separate and distinct service from the Match, run by a different organization. You must register to use AAPI separately from registering for the Match.

If you do not obtain a position in Phase I of the Match, you may participate in Phase II, and you will have an opportunity after the Phase I Match results are released to submit applications using AAPI to programs participating in Phase II.
Match Code Numbers
After you have registered for the Match, you should enter your 5-digit applicant Match Code Number into AAPI. Programs can access your Match Code Number from your AAPI application even if you enter it after you have submitted applications.
You should check with each program directly about its application requirements and deadline dates. In addition all application requirements, including interviews, must be completed prior to the Rank Order List deadline for the Phase of the Match in which you are participating. The Rank Order List deadline for Phase I is February 4, 2022 and the deadline for Phase II is March 14, 2022.
Internships Participating in the Match
Programs participating in the Match are APPIC members; however, they may be accredited or non-accredited.
APPIC and the Match maintain separate directories of internship programs that applicants may consult when searching for programs of interest. The two directories serve different purposes.

Applying to Non-Match Internships
Training Sites that are not members of APPIC do not participate in the Match. As a result, some applicants may apply to both participating and non-participating programs. If you are in this situation, you must decide, prior to submitting your Rank Order List, whether to participate in the Match or to pursue positions outside the Match. Only programs that are participating in the Match can be included on your Rank Order List.
If you accept a position at a program that is not participating in the Match, you must withdraw from the Match.
In order to submit your Rank Order List by the deadline for each Phase of the Match, all your interviews should be completed before the Rank Order List deadline date for each Phase. You are reminded that, according to the Applicant Agreement, you may not make any commitments to or contracts with any participating program prior to the release of the Match results.
Programs and applicants are allowed to communicate about matters that do not involve the sharing of ranking information. Programs may voluntarily choose to inform applicants as to whether or not the applicants remain under consideration for admission (e.g., whether or not the applicant will be ranked), but are not obliged to do so. Programs must never request ranking information from any applicant, and applicants must never request ranking information from any program. Furthermore, prior to the release of the Phase II Match results, programs must not disclose to any applicant the position of any applicant on their Rank Order List(s) for either Phase of the Match, and applicants must not disclose to any program any information about their rankings for either Phase of the Match.
