Postdoctoral Dental Matching Program for Positions Beginning in 2024

Release Dates

Phase II

Match result information for AEGD, US GPR, OMS and PED positions will be available at 12:00 p.m. noon Eastern Time on January 22, 2024.

Phase I

ORTHO, PERIO, PROS, ANES and Canadian GPR programs must log into the NMS Match System to access their Phase I Match result.

Content

When the results of the Match are released, the following information will be available to residencies:

  • A report of the Match results for each program offered by the residency
  • A report of the result obtained by each applicant who matched to a position
  • For programs with available positions - a file of information on applicants who either submitted Rank Order Lists for the Match but were not matched or withdrew but indicated they were interested in seeking a position in the Post-Match Process
  • Summary statistics of the results of the Match for applicants and programs

When the results are released, applicants who did not obtain a position in the Match will have access to a list of positions that remain available after the Match. Programs that participated in the Match will be able to update the information shown on this list, including contact information and the number of positions available in each program.

Distribution

Match result notification emails will be sent to all residencies and applicants that certified Rank Order Lists. The emails are sent on the morning of the Match Results Day with the intention of having all emails sent by 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time. Due to unreliable email exchanges and inbound servers, we cannot guarantee a delivery time for the emails.

Beginning at 12:00 p.m. noon Eastern Time on the Match Results Day, each registered applicant and residency can log into the NMS Match System to access their personal Match result online.

You should contact the applicant(s) with whom your residency is matched as soon as possible after 12:00 p.m. noon Eastern Time on the Match Results Day to acknowledge the Match results. You must also send a letter of confirmation of the Match results, within 10 days of the Match Results Day, to each applicant matched to your residency. Matched applicants must return the letter of confirmation in accordance with the program's instructions within 30 days of the release of the Match results.

Although NMS makes every effort to provide you with your Match result on Match Results Day, failure to receive your result on that day does not affect your obligation to the applicants matched to your residency.

Statistics

Phase II statistics will be released on January 22, 2024.

Post-Match Process

Phase I

ORTHO, PERIO, PROS, ANES and Canadian GPR Positions

Programs with available positions are permitted to fill those positions independently of the Match with applicants that did not obtain a position. Programs can access information in the NMS Match System on applicants who either submitted Rank Order Lists but were not matched or withdrew but indicated they were interested in seeking a position in the Post-Match Process.

Unmatched applicants will have access to a List of Programs with Available Positions for the Post-Match Process. Programs that participated in Phase I of the Match can log into the NMS Match System to update the information on the list.

  • Updating information on the List of Programs with Available Positions

Programs must log into the NMS Match System in order to update their contact information or the number of positions available.

Initially, only programs that were left with unfilled positions and did not indicate that they wanted to be excluded from the Post-Match Process will be shown on the list. All programs that were active in Phase I of the Match are able to update their information. Programs that did not register, or that registered but withdrew from the Match, are not able to update their information.

    • Updating Contact Information: Changes to contact information are made in the Profile section of the NMS Match System. Contact changes will apply only to the List of Programs with Available Positions and will not be reflected permanently in NMS records. Permanent changes to contact information after the Rank Order List deadline must be submitted to NMS in writing, not through the NMS Match System.

    • Updating the Number of Available Positions: Programs can increase or decrease the number of Post-Match positions available from the Program Dashboard. Any position that is added into the Post-Match Process will be included in the total number of positions offered by the program for purposes of calculating the Match fee for the program.

Updates do not appear in real time, but are made frequently to ensure that the information provided to applicants is as current as possible. The system will close for updates on April 15, 2024.

    Fees for Adding Positions

Each program that registers for the Match is charged a fee that varies depending on the number of positions offered, as specified in the Residency Agreement. Any position that was not offered in the Match but is added to a program in the Post-Match Process will be included in the total number of positions offered by the program for purposes of calculating the program's final Match fee.

For example, suppose a program initially offers 3 positions in the Match. If the program fills all the positions in the Match, the program will not be included initially on the List of Programs with Available Positions. If the program then adds a position into the Post-Match Process, the program will be added to the List of Programs with Available Positions, and the final Match fees charged to the program for the 2024 Match will be based on a total of 4 positions offered.

There will be no additional charge to programs for updating their contact information or removing positions from the List of Programs with Available Positions.

Phase II

AEGD, US GPR, OMS and PED Positions

  • Post-Match Process for Phase II

Following the release of the results, AEGD, US GPR, OMS and PED programs with available positions are permitted to fill those positions, independently of the Match, with applicants who did not obtain a position in the Match. However, no action to fill AEGD, US GPR, OMS and PED positions remaining unfilled after Phase II is to be taken prior to 12:00 p.m. noon Eastern Time on January 22, 2024.

Beginning at 12:00 p.m. noon Eastern Time on January 22, 2024, a list of AEGD, US GPR, OMS and PED programs with available positions will be provided to unmatched applicants in the NMS Match System beginning at 12:00 p.m. noon Eastern Time on January 22, 2024. Residencies may update the information on this list.

Residencies will also have access beginning at 12:00 p.m. noon Eastern Time on January 22, 2024 to information on applicants who either submitted Rank Order Lists but were not matched or withdrew but indicated they were interested in seeking a position in the Post-Match Process.
