Extern Match

  • What is the Extern Match?

The Northeastern Regional Externship Match (Extern Match) is an application service and matching program that provides an orderly process to help applicants obtain externship positions of their choice, and to help externship sites obtain applicants of their choice.

  • What's involved in participating in the Extern Match?
    1. Identify Sites of Interest

Applicants should investigate sites of interest and determine whether or not they are participating in the Extern Match. The list of sites participating in the Extern Match is available on this website.

    2. Register to Participate in the Extern Match

Applicants interested in sites offering positions in the Extern Match must register online in the Extern Match Portal.

    3. Apply

All applications to participating sites are submitted using the Extern Match Portal. The Extern Match Portal includes an Application Service that allows applicants to send applications to sites.

    4. Interview

Sites and applicants can use the Extern Match Portal to streamline and automate interview scheduling.

    5. Submit Rank Order Lists

After applications and interviews are complete, each applicant and site submits a Rank Order List of preferred placements in the Extern Match Portal. The Rank Order List indicates your order of preference for the placements you are considering.

    6. The Matching Algorithm Processes the Rankings

NMS uses a matching algorithm to process the preferences stated on the Rank Order Lists and place individuals into positions. The matching algorithm will try to place you into the most preferred site on your Rank Order List that ranks you and does not fill all its available positions with applicants it prefers.

    7. Get Your Result

Match results will be released on the Match Results Day by email and online via the Extern Match website.

  • Am I eligible to participate in the Extern Match?
