Dual Position

2026 Extern Match

Overview

Some PENDELDOT sites offer part-time positions (8 or fewer hours per week). To satisfy the full training requirement in the Extern Match Guidelines, applicants seeking these positions will need to be placed into two part-time positions.

Currently, the only sites offering part-time positions are:

  • 353 - ABC Parenting Institute
  • 414 - CHOP - ADHD
  • 440 - CHOP - Cardiac Psychology Outpatient Consultation
  • 420 - CHOP - Endocrinology & Diabetes
  • 471 - CHOP - Feeding
  • 441 - CHOP - Gastroenterology & Urology Programs
  • 415 - CHOP - Health & Wellbeing Clinic
  • 442 - CHOP - Inpatient/Outpatient Consult & Intervention
  • 390 - CHOP - Neurology Intervention
  • 421 - CHOP - Oncology
  • 424 - CHOP - Sleep Program
  • 165 - HARBOR
  • 226 - Nemours Childrens Health, Delaware Valley
  • 309 - St. Christopher's Hospital for Children

If you are not seeking one of the part-time positions at the sites listed above, these instructions do not apply to you. Please review the Rankings User Guide instead.

If you intend to rank both part-time and full-time positions, please see the additional instructions in the section below on using the "99999-No Match" Code

The Extern Match allows applicants who wish to rank part-time positions to participate as dual-position applicants by submitting two Rank Order Lists that create combinations of two part-time positions the applicant can be placed into using the matching process.

When participating as a dual-position applicant, you will rank pairs of positions rather than single positions individually. Each entry on your list represents a combination of Position A and Position B that you are willing to accept together.

Tips for Dual-Position Applicants

1

How the Process Works

  • Go to the Rankings page
  • Select the option to set yourself up as a Dual Position Applicant
    set up dual position lists
  • Prepare two separate Rank Order Lists:
    • One for Position A (your preferences for the first position)
    • One for Position B (your preferences for the second position)
    select dual position list
  • Each pair is formed by the tracks ranked at the same rank number in the Rank Order Lists for Position A and Position B. In other words, the track listed at Rank 1 for Position A is paired with the track listed at Rank 1 for Position B, the entries at Rank 2 form the second pair, and so on.
  • You may include the same track multiple times on your list by pairing it with different choices on the other list. For example, you might pair City Clinic track with General Hospital track at one rank, and pair City Clinic track with Community Hospital track at another rank.
  • The Match will attempt to place you into your highest ranked pair of positions for which both choices are available.
  • By ranking a pair, you are stating that you will only accept that pair if you can obtain both positions. If you cannot match to one side of the pair, you will not be matched to that pair.
  • When entering your rankings, use the Printer-Friendly option to view all the pairs you have entered. Review this printer-friendly view carefully to confirm that the pairs created from your two lists line up exactly as intended.
    print rank order list
  • You must certify both Rank Order Lists (for Position A and Position B) for them to be used in the Match.

Using the "99999-No Match" Code

If you are considering full-time positions (16 hours per week) as well as pairs of part-time positions:

  • Enter the full-time position on Position A's list in its desired order of preference, and
  • Enter 99999-No Match for Position B.

Example:

Position A Position B
Mercy Clinic
11234 - Full Time
99999-No Match

You may also use "99999 - No Match" if you are willing to accept only one part-time position, but you must check with your DCT to confirm this is permitted.

Example:

Position A Position B
Community Clinic
22334 - Part Time
99999-No Match

Only include pairs with "99999 - No Match" if you are willing to be matched to a full-time position or only a single part-time position.

How to Prepare Your Rankings

The following is an example of how to prepare your Rankings.

List all Tracks that are Acceptable to you:

  • General Hospital - Part Time
  • Mercy Clinic - Full Time
  • Suburban Health Center - Full Time
  • City Clinic - Part Time
  • Community Hospital - Part Time

Assemble a List of Acceptable Pairs:

  • Mercy Clinic - Full Time / No Match
  • Suburban Health Center - Full Time / No Match
  • City Clinic - Part Time / General Hospital - Part Time
  • Community Hospital Part-Time / General Hospital - Part Time
  • City Clinic - Part Time / Community Hospital - Part Time

If you are ranking full time positions, they must be ranked as Position A and No Match must be ranked as Position B. Do not include a pair where both positions are No Match.

Order the Pairs According to Your True Preference:

  1. Mercy Clinic - Full Time
  2. City Clinic - Part Time / General Hospital - Part Time
  3. Community Hospital Part-Time / General Hospital - Part Time
  4. City Clinic - Part Time / Community Hospital - Part Time
  5. Suburban Health Center - Full Time

Enter your Rank Order Lists:

When you enter your rankings, you will submit two lists: one for Position A and one for Position B.

  • Rank the tracks in order for Position A, then rank the tracks in order for Position B.
  • Use the Printer-Friendly option to confirm that your pairs display correctly.

Both Position A and Position B lists must have the same number of ranks. If Position A has 5 ranks, Position B must also have 5.

Important Rules

Equal Length Lists:
Both Position A and Position B lists must have the same number of ranks. If Position A has 5 ranks, Position B must also have 5.

No "No Match/No Match" Pairs:

  • Do not include a pair where both positions are "99999-No Match". This will leave you unmatched at that rank, and lower-ranked pairs will not be considered.
  • If you are ranking full time positions, they must be ranked for Position A and 99999-No Match must be ranked for Position B.
  • 99999-No Match should not be listed for Position A and should only be included on the list for Position B.

No Duplicate Pairs:
Preferences for tracks are not side specific. When the match processing attempts to place you into a pair of part time positions, it does not matter which side (A or B) a position is listed on. Your likelihood of matching to track X for position A and track Y for position B is the same as matching to track Y for position A and track X for position B.

  1. Do not enter the same pair of positions twice, by simply switching the list each position is listed on. This will be considered a duplicate ranking.

      Position A Position B
    1. Mercy Clinic
         11421- Full Time
    1. 99999 - No Match
    2. City Clinic
         21634 - Part Time
    2. General Hospital
         24134 - Part Time
    3. City Clinic
         21634 - Part Time
    3. Community Hospital
         22334 - Part Time
    4. General Hospital
         24134 - Part Time
    4. Community Hospital
         22334 - Part Time
    5. Community Hospital
         22334 - Part Time
    5. General Hospital
         24134 - Part Time
    6. Suburban Health Center
         13521 - Full Time
    6. 99999 - No Match

Rank 5 is a duplicate of rank 4. It is the same two programs on different lists.

  2. Each track offered in the match is assigned a match code number. When entering pairs of tracks, the track with the lower match code number should always be on the list for Position A, and the track with the higher code number should always be listed for Position B. While this sequencing will not affect your match result, as noted above, it will help to ensure you have not inadvertently ranked the same pair at different ranks, and it will facilitate validity checking carried out by NMS on submitted lists prior to running the match processing.

No "Full-Time/Part-Time" Pairs:
You cannot combine a full-time position with a part-time position in a pair.

  Position A Position B

     11421 - Full Time
1. 99999
     No Match

Rank 5 has a full time position paired with a part time position.

Tips for Dual-Position Applicants

Rank only acceptable pairs:
Do not rank any combination that you would not want. If you would reject a particular pair, leave it off your list.

Rank order matters:
The matching process will try to assign you to the most preferred ranked pair available. Always list your true preferences in order, even if your likelihood of matching to some combinations seem unlikely.

Consider the positions together:
Evaluate how the two part-time positions will combine (location, schedule, travel) to ensure the pair of positions are compatible. Do not rank pairs of positions that are incompatible.

Don't try to game the system:
The algorithm is designed to give you the best result if you list your choices according to your true preferences. Trying to predict what others will do usually works against you.
