Match Results Day

  • Why do we have to wait to get the results?

NMS spends time between the Rank Order List deadline and Match Results Day checking and re-checking the data to ensure the accuracy and integrity of the Match results. Before we can process the Match, we look for potential errors or mistakes in the rankings submitted by applicants and programs. We are able to catch some (but not all) errors, and it does take a significant amount of time to reach these participants to follow-up, verify, and correct these mistakes. Program Directors and applicants are generally busy and can be very difficult to reach. We then have to run the matching algorithm and prepare the results for distribution via the various channels. While it may seem like it takes a long time to get your result, we are able to deliver the results in a time frame that is equal to or less than that of other matching programs of comparable (or even smaller) size in other professions.

  • I will be unavailable to receive emails the day results are released.

If you will be unable to receive email or access your residency's Match results online on the Match Results Day, you can provide a written and signed request to NMS on residency letterhead to send the email of the results to an alternate contact.

The alternate email will not replace the email currently on file in the NMS Match System. All account and residency contact information will remain the same.

The alternate contact will receive an email with the Match results. NMS will send the result to only one email address for each residency.

  • Why can't I contact the applicants matched to my program until 12:00 p.m. noon Eastern Time?

We send applicants and programs their results by email before 12:00 p.m. noon Eastern Time. However, due to unreliable email exchanges and inbound message handling, we cannot guarantee the time of delivery.

We ask that applicants and programs wait until 12:00 p.m. noon Eastern Time before contacting each other to ensure that all participants have an opportunity to obtain their results online through the NMS Match System if they did not receive the email.

  • Can I get a copy of my Rank Order List?

You are able to view and print a program's Rank Order List in the NMS Match System until 4 days after the Match Results Day for your Phase of the Match. You are strongly encouraged to print a copy of your Rank Order List for your residency's records before it is removed from the NMS Match System.

  • Can I get a copy of my results?

An email containing your results is emailed to you on the Match Results Day. Your results are also available online in the NMS Match System until April 15, 2024. You are strongly encouraged to save a copy of the result notification for your residency's records before it is removed from the NMS Match System.

Post-Match Process

  • How does the Post-Match Process work?

Following release of the results for each Phase of the Match, programs with available positions are free to contact and fill those positions with unmatched applicants. NMS is not involved in the filling of positions during the Post-Match Process.

Applicants will have access to a list of programs with available positions. Programs will have access to information on applicants who did not obtain a position.

Programs that fill positions during the Post-Match Process are not required to notify NMS of the placement; however, programs should update the number of positions still available in the NMS Match System, and remove themselves from the List of Programs with Available Positions when all their positions are filled.

  • How do I remove or add positions in the Post-Match Process?

After the Match is completed, a list of programs that were active at the time of the Match and that did not fill all their positions in the Match is made available to applicants who are still seeking a position.

Programs must log into the NMS Match System in order to update the information shown on the List of Programs with Available Positions.

    Remove Positions

    • Log into the NMS Match System
    • Select the Edit button in the Positions Available in Post-Match section of the Program Dashboard
    • Use the drop-down menu to select the number of positions still available in your program

If you set the number of positions available to 0, the program will be removed from the list.

There is no additional charge to programs for updating their contact information or removing positions from the List of Programs with Available Positions.

    Add Positions

    • Log into the NMS Match System
    • Select the Edit button in the Positions Available in Post-Match section of the Program Dashboard
    • Use the drop-down menu to select the number of positions available in your program

Programs that have at least one position available in the Post-Match Process will be shown on the List of Programs with Available Positions.

Any position that was not offered in the Match but is added in the Post-Match Process will be included in the total number of positions offered by the program for purposes of calculating the program's 2024 Match fee.
