Rankings for Applicants

2024 CASPR

Things to Know

  1. The list of preferred tracks you submit to the NMS Match System is called a Rank Order List.
  2. You should only rank tracks for which you are eligible. Applicants who do not pass the APMLE Part II examination will be withdrawn automatically from CASPR, and will not be eligible to participate in the Match or MPII.
  3. To participate in MPII of CASPR, you must log into the NMS Match System to enter and certify your Rank Order List by the MPII Rank Order List deadline.
  4. If you do not intend to submit a Rank Order List for CASPR, you must withdraw using the NMS Match System.

Each program offers one or more tracks in the Match. A track refers to a type of position or stream of training at a program (e.g., PMSR, PMSR/RRA). Most programs offer only one track, but some offer more than one track. You must rank, and are matched to, a specific track offered by a program.

Strategy

The Matching Algorithm is designed such that it cannot be gamed or manipulated.

The only strategy is to rank your choices in order of your true preferences, without considering how you expect to be ranked by any track.

Rank all tracks at programs to which you applied that would be acceptable. Submitting a longer list of tracks may reduce your chances of being left unmatched.

Do not rank any track that you consider unacceptable (i.e., you would not want to be matched to the track, even if it was the only position available to you). You can only be matched to tracks that appear on your Rank Order List.

Certify Your Rank Order List

Certifying your Rank Order List indicates that the rankings are complete and the Rank Order List is ready to be used in the matching process. You must certify your Rank Order List in the NMS Match System in order for it to be used in the matching process.

You can make changes to a list even after it is certified, until the Rank Order List Deadline. If you change a list after it is certified, you simply have to certify the list again before the deadline in order for it to be used in the Match.

Participating as a Couple

Two applicants who wish to coordinate their matches (e.g., obtain positions in the same geographic location) may participate in the matching process as a Couple.

Note: If you participated in the Match as a member of a couple and did not obtain a position, your Couple Status will be changed back automatically to INDIVIDUAL for MPII. If you wish to participate in MPII as a member of a couple, you will have to change your Couple Status for MPII in the NMS Match System.
