Why Use Multiple Lists
Most programs will need to submit only one Rank Order List for the Match, in order to match with the most desirable applicants to the program. However, some programs may have special requirements that can only be satisfied by submitting multiple Rank Order Lists for a single program.
It is possible within the matching algorithm to attempt to recruit a particular "mix" or distribution of applicants based on specific applicant characteristics such as language fluency or location of residence. Examples of how multiple lists can be used to satisfy special requirements are included with the instructions that can be downloaded from this page.
Residencies offering more than one program in the Match can choose to submit multiple lists for some or all of their programs, if desired. For example, a residency offering a pediatric program and an adult program could choose to submit two lists for the pediatric program and only one list for the adult program, if that was necessary to satisfy their requirements.
How to Construct Multiple Lists
To construct the appropriate multiple lists for a program, you must:
- Divide the program's available positions into separate categories
- Designate how many positions are to be allocated to each category
- Create a ranked list of the appropriate applicants for each category
Applicants do not need to know that the program is submitting multiple lists, or on which specific list(s) for the program their names may appear. Applicants applying to a program that has multiple lists for a single program need to only include on their Rank Order List the single Program Code Number originally assigned to the program.
Programs that submit multiple Rank Order Lists for a single program cannot submit their rankings using the NMS Match System. These programs must submit their Rank Order Lists in writing to NMS by the Rank Order List deadline on February 20, 2018.
Procedures to Submit Multiple Lists
If you wish to submit multiple lists for a single program, you should still use the NMS Match System to confirm and/or modify non-ranking information for the program, including the total number of positions to be filled by the program in the Match and contact information for the program.Download Instructions, Examples and Forms
After reviewing the instructions and examples carefully, the required forms should be completed, signed and submitted to NMS by the Rank Order List deadline, either as a scanned e-mail attachment sent to firstname.lastname@example.org, or by fax to 844-977-0555.
If you have questions about completing the form or submitting multiple lists, contact NMS.
Confirm Multiple Rank Order List Information
Since the rankings on multiple Lists submitted for a single program cannot be entered or confirmed through the NMS Match System, arrangements can be made to send a confirmation printout of the program's Rank Order List information to you by e-mail or fax. To request the confirmation by e-mail or fax, you must send a written request along with the Lists submitted to NMS, and provide NMS with the e-mail or fax number to which the information should be sent.
