Frequently Asked Questions by Applicants

Access

What will I need to use the NMS Match System?

The NMS Match System is designed to be used with the security and features of modern web browsers.

We recommend using the most up to date version of one of the following browsers:

If you access the system with a browser that is not in the list above, or with a browser that is significantly out of date, you may experience problems.

You must have JavaScript enabled and accept cookies in order for the NMS Match System to function correctly.

How do I log in to the NMS Match System?

Select the option for Log in to NMS Match System from the menu on the left side of the page.

To log in to the NMS Match System you will be required to enter both the e-mail address and password that you provided previously on the Match web site.

What if I don't know my password?

If you do not have your password, select the option for Log in to NMS Match System from the menu on the left side of the page, then select the Forgot Password? link and follow the instructions to reset your password.

Can I submit my Rank Order List by any method other than online?

No. Applicants must submit their Rank Order Lists online using the NMS Match System.

Can anyone else see my Rank Order List?

No. Access to your list in the NMS Match System requires entry of both your email and your password. Your password should be kept strictly confidential and in a secure place. Do not communicate your password to anyone who you do not want to have access to your Rank Order List. Programs to which you have applied need to know your applicant Code Number, but you should not provide your password to programs.

Timing

When will the NMS Match System be available?

The NMS Match System will be available for Match participants to enter Rank Order Lists as follows:

NMS Match System Opens For Rankings: January 9, 2018
Rank Order List Deadline: January 19, 2018 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time

What is the deadline to enter my Rank Order List? Can I make changes after the deadline?

Rank Order Lists must be entered and certified in the NMS Match System by 11:59 p.m. ET on January 19, 2018. You will not be able to change or certify your list after the deadline. You are strongly encouraged to complete and certify your list well before the Rank Order List deadline to avoid system access problems near the deadline.

How often is the list of participating programs updated in the NMS Match System?

Program information will be updated nightly in the NMS Match System, so applicants will always have current information.

Use

Is there a limit to the number of ranks I can submit?

There is no limit to the number of programs you can rank in the NMS Match System. However, you should rank only those programs to which you have applied and to which you are prepared to be matched. You can only rank programs that are participating in the Match.

What if I have no ranks to submit?

You may not have any ranks to submit for the Match for several reasons, for example: you have decided not to pursue GME training at this time; you have obtained a position at a program that is not participating in the Match, such as a military position; you have decided to participate only in the NRMP® Main Residency Match; none of the programs to which you applied are now of interest to you; or, the programs to which you applied have indicated they will not rank you.

If you do not intend to submit any rankings of programs for the Match you must withdraw from the Match prior to the Rank Order List deadline.

Note: Applicants who withdraw from the Match will not be matched to a position. However, withdrawn applicants are permitted to seek positions after the Match. They will be able to access information on positions that remain available after the Match.

Read the page titled Withdraw from the Match for more information.

Can couples use the NMS Match System?

Yes, applicants identify themselves as part of a couple and enter their Rank Order Lists for the Match using the NMS Match System. Each member of a couple must separately identify their partner in the NMS Match System, and must enter their ranks into the system. Members of a couple must have the same number of ranks in order to be able to certify both lists for use in the Match. Read the page on Participate as a Couple for more information.

What if I don't know a program's Code Number?

There are three sources you can use to obtain a program's Code Number. The first source is the List of Participating Programs available on this web site. This List will be updated when changes occur in program participation; therefore, you are encouraged to consult the List before finalizing your Rank Order List.

Alternatively, you can obtain the Code Number for a program from the Director of Medical Education of the institution offering the program. In particular, if you are ranking a program at an institution that is offering more than one program in the Match, you should check with the institution's DME to ensure you are using the correct Code Number for the program you wish to rank. If you rank a program at an institution represented by one code number, but you are ranked by the institution on a Rank Order List for a different program with a different code number, a match will not be made.

Finally, within the NMS Match System, you can also search for participating programs from the Rankings page by institution name, DME name, program type or city.

The NMS Match System indicates that a program I wanted to rank is now withdrawn. Should I remove the program from my list?

Programs may change their status and decide to participate in the Match at any time until the Rank Order List deadline. Therefore, if you planned to rank a program that is now withdrawn, you are strongly encouraged to leave the withdrawn program on your Rank Order List. If you leave the program on your list and the program again becomes active in the Match prior to the Rank Order List deadline, that ranking will be used in the Match. If the program remains withdrawn, that ranking will not be used in the Match, and your Rank Order List will be processed as if you had not ranked the withdrawn program. If you have any question concerning the status of a program in the Match you should contact the institution's Director of Medical Education directly.

Will I be able to print a confirmation of my list before and/or after submission?

Yes, you can print a copy of your Rank Order List at any step during the process of entering your list, or after certifying your list, by clicking on the Printer-Friendly link (provided at the top or bottom of your Rank Order List) and then using the print function of your browser. It is strongly recommended that you print a copy of your final certified Rank Order List for your records by the Rank Order List deadline.

You will also be able to view and print information in the NMS Match System for four days after the release of the Match results (until 11:59 p.m. ET on February 9). However, you will not be able to change any information or certify a Rank Order List in the NMS Match System after the Rank Order List deadline.

How does NMS know when I've finished entering my Rank Order List?    -and-
What does it mean to "certify" my Rank Order List?

You must indicate that you have finished entering your Rank Order List by certifying the list in the NMS Match System. Only lists that have been certified by the Rank Order List deadline will be used by NMS in the Match.

To certify your list:

  • Press Submit for Certification (at the bottom of your Rank Order List) once you have added all your programs and they are in the desired order of preference.
  • The NMS Match System will alert you if issues or problems exist in your Rank Order List, and prompt you to certify your list by re-entering your password and pressing Submit.

You can return any time until the Rank Order List deadline to make changes to your list, even after it has been certified. Whenever you change your rankings, you will have to recertify your list in order for it to be used in the Match.

Can I make changes or additions to my Rank Order List?

Yes, until 11:59 p.m. ET on January 19, 2018.

You are advised to certify your Rank Order List at the end of each session in which you have changed the rankings on your list, rather than waiting until right before the deadline to certify your list. You can make changes to your list even after it has been certified, until the Rank Order List deadline. Whenever you change your rankings your list will become un-certified, and you will have to re-certify your list in order for it to be used in the Match. Only lists that are certified by the Rank Order List deadline will be used in the Match.

If I go into the system to change only my contact information (address, phone, e-mail), will I need to re-certify my list?

No. If you have already certified your Rank Order List, you will only need to re-certify your list if you change your rankings in some way, or if you change your couple status. Changes to contact information can be made until the Rank Order List deadline.

Should I use the NMS Match System and also e-mail or fax in a copy of my Rank Order List?

No. NMS will not accept duplicate copies of Rank Order Lists. Duplicate lists received by e-mail, fax or regular mail will be discarded and only the data entered in the NMS Match System will be used in the Match.

How can I confirm that NMS will receive the list I have entered into the NMS Match System?

If your list is certified in the NMS Match System, and you are not withdrawn, your list will be used by NMS in the Match.

On the Rankings page, a certified list will have a green banner at the top of the page indicating the list is certified. A list that is not certified will have a red banner at the top of the page indicating the list is not certified.

You can also return to the Dashboard page and if your list has been certified, a message will indicate that the Rank Order List is certified.

Do not call NMS to confirm that your Rank Order List has been certified.

Who can I contact if I have problems using the NMS Match System?

The NMS Match System includes a Help page and many tooltips indicated by a question mark (?) that provide useful information. In addition, if you have questions concerning your use of the NMS Match System, you can call NMS for technical support from 10:00 a.m. ET through 4:00 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday, at (800) 461-6322. You can also send a question by e-mail to aoairp@natmatch.com.

Other Match Questions

How can I withdraw from the Match?

If you have been assigned to a position in a military program, or if you decide not to submit any rankings of programs for the Match for any other reason, you must withdraw yourself from the Match through the NMS Match System by the Rank Order List deadline (January 19, 2018 at 11:59 p.m. ET).

Note: Applicants who withdraw from the Match will not be matched to a position. However, withdrawn applicants are permitted to seek positions after the Match. They will be able to access information on positions that remain available after the Match.

Read the page titled Withdraw from the Match for instructions on how to withdraw.

If you withdraw, any rankings of programs you may have submitted will not be used in the Match. If you submit and certify any rankings of participating programs and you do not withdraw prior to the Rank Order List deadline, your rankings will be used in the Match. If you are matched with a program, you must accept the position with which you are matched, as described in the Applicant Agreement.

If I have previously withdrawn, how can I be reinstated in the Match?

If you withdraw but subsequently decide to submit rankings of programs for the Match, you can reinstate yourself through the NMS Match System prior to the Rank Order List deadline (January 19, 2018 at 11:59 p.m. ET).

To reinstate yourself in the Match, Log in to the NMS Match System. Click the Edit button in the Status section of the Dashboard. You will need to confirm your reinstatement by re-entering your password and clicking submit.

What do I do if I have been assigned to a military position?

If you have been assigned to a position in a military program, you must not submit any choices of programs for the Match. However, you must inform NMS of your military position by January 19, 2018 by withdrawing yourself from the Match through the NMS Match System.

Read the page titled Withdraw from the Match for instructions on how to withdraw for a military obligation.

How does the computer match me to a position?

The process of carrying out the Match based on the Rank Order Lists submitted by applicants and programs is described elsewhere on this web site in the page titled The Matching Algorithm.

What if I am registered in both the AOA Match and the NRMP® Main Residency Match?

If you have registered in both the AOA Match and the NRMP® Main Residency Match, you must decide by the Rank Order List deadline for the AOA Match (January 19, 2018 at 11:59 p.m. ET) whether or not to submit any rankings of programs for the AOA Match.

If you choose to submit rankings of programs for the NRMP® Main Residency Match only, and not for the AOA Match, then you must withdraw yourself from the AOA Match through the NMS Match System by the Rank Order List deadline (January 19, 2018 at 11:59 p.m. ET).

If you do submit and certify any rankings of participating programs for the AOA Match, and you do not withdraw from the AOA Match by the Rank Order List deadline, your rankings will be included in the AOA Match. If you are matched with a program in the AOA Match and are also registered in the NRMP® Main Residency Match, you must not submit any rankings for the NRMP® Match for concurrent programs:

  • You must accept the position with which you are matched in the AOA Match, as described in the Applicant Agreement.
  • If you match to a traditional rotating internship (OGME-1 only) in the AOA Match, you must not submit any rankings for the NRMP® Match for a PGY-1 position. You must review your list of choices for the NRMP® Match prior to the NRMP® Rank Order List deadline. If you had intended to rank only NRMP® programs that begin in PGY-1, you must withdraw from the NRMP® Match. If you had intended to rank NRMP® programs that begin in PGY-2 ("A" programs), then you must remove any NRMP® programs that begin in PGY-1 from your NRMP® primary Rank Order List, and you must not submit any supplemental Rank Order Lists for PGY-1 positions.
  • If you match to a residency program (that starts in OGME-1 or OGME-2) in the AOA Match, you must not submit any rankings for the NRMP® Match for a PGY-1 or PGY-2 position. You must withdraw from the NRMP® Match prior to the NRMP® Rank Order List deadline.
  • Your matched status will be communicated to the NRMP® by the AOA, and you will not be permitted to submit any rankings for the NRMP® Match for concurrent programs. The NRMP® will automatically withdraw you and/or modify your rankings for the NRMP® Match after the NRMP® Rank Order List deadline, if necessary, to ensure that you do not match to concurrent programs through the NRMP®.
